Under The Sun For Some Fun (#1001)

Several studies cited that “outdoor” play is also an important time to a young child. Outdoor play can assist a child to develop in all the domains (cognitive, language, physical, social/emotional and the arts) and therefore, help support the progress and development of the “whole” child. Spending time outside can improve a child’s creativity, ability to solve problems (personal and academic) and be in tune with the surrounding, one’s self and nature.

Outdoor furniture is an extension of the playground. A preschool picnic table is a great way to encourage young children to sit and just converse with each other, relax and maybe play a game. In addition, it provides age appropriate area for young children to sit and eat and do projects and/or just provide a place to sit or enjoy nature or people watch. Garbage cans are also an extension of outdoor furniture. It keeps the area clean and clear of unnecessary debris. It also encourages young children to throw away their wastes in the appropriate area and teaches them to respect the planet.

Outdoor equipment is also significant to “outdoor” play. It also facilitates the growth of the “whole “child. Our school lacks balls. We have a basketball hoop but no basketball. We have a space to have a soccer net but no soccer ball. We have appropriate zone for throwing and catching a football but we have no football. In addition, we have an old seesaw that is missing several handles but we cannot yet part with it because the children enjoy playing in it. For safety issues, we do need to replace the seesaw soon.

The fulfillment of this dream will greatly enhance the quality of the school in several ways. The addition of the garbage can will eliminate waste and debris from the children’s play area. It will also deter rodents and insects. Young children will now have an area that is clean and just their size to rest, play, talk and or sit with the new picnic table. In addition, children can now have functioning balls that they can bounce, throw, kick and catch. More importantly, enough supply of balls so that bickering among children because of insufficient amount of balls will be decrease. In addition, the replacement of the seesaw will provide safety and piece of mind to both teachers and children.
