Nature Play: Welcome To The Mud Kitchen (#1000)

Nature Play: Welcome To The Mud Kitchen (#1000)

Welcome to the Mud Kitchen! Concordia Place on Whipple is looking to extend its curriculum to the outdoors through the installation of mud kitchens in our courtyard. Mud kitchens are much more than just a chance to get messy, but rather a chance to engage in varying learning opportunities. Children will be able to engage in personal, social, and emotional scenarios as they are able to interact and recreate everyday kitchen tasks together. Children will learn to share, take turns, and communicate with each other as they role play through their tasks. As children are playing, their physical development will be challenged in different ways than in the classroom as they transport their own water from spout to kitchen with pails, pans, and pots. The opportunity to get children outside to discover and explore their environment more would be greatly enhanced with the addition of these new learning materials!

Outdoor play is important in early childhood education. It gives young children an opportunity to develop small and large motor skills. It is important for young children to have a chance to develop these skills outside since they are spending fewer hours outside playing and are spending more times indoors. Not only does playing outdoors offer physical benefits, it also improves cognitive development and social development. With the addition of outdoor learning equipment, such as mud kitchens, we are able to extend our learning and play to the outdoors more often.
