Students, Please Take Your Seats (#601)

Students, Please Take Your Seats (#601)

My dream is to be able to replace the aging, collapsing and broken seating in my classroom for the 25 middle-school students in 7th and 8th grade. I am requesting 25 new chairs and a set of floor-savers.

Our self-contained 7th/8th grade classroom is at student capacity… What a blessing! We are using every square inch of that classroom to accomplish collaborations, investigations, small-group mini- lessons, lunch and some much-needed up and at ’em movement that all middle-schoolers require. With all this creative use of space, it makes it necessary to have dependable and adequate stations and seating for the students. Unfortunately, our seating has seen better days…those days were probably 25 years ago when I used them as a student. Yes, our class is still using the very same chairs, however they are not in the same condition. Many of the chairs are simply falling apart. Broken back rests, missing feet, collapsing book racks, vanishing screws and cracked welding all lead to limited and gentle use of our seating…which is a very difficult task for middler-schoolers, as we all know. New stackable chairs would allow my class more freedom to provide flexible group seating and open up space for larger activities in the classroom when needed. The addition of floor-savers to the chairs’ feet would also provide some protection to our wood floors and dampen the sound of moving chairs to prevent additional disturbance to the pre-schoolers below us. Overall, the blessing of new chairs would be one from which students receive direct, immediate and daily use.
