Carpet, Cabinet, And Classroom Community, Oh My! (#600)

Carpet, Cabinet, And Classroom Community, Oh My! (#600)

Our class dream is to have a large rug for the front of our room to serve as a meeting space, and also to have a cabinet to store teaching materials, especially for science as we move to the Next Generation Science Standards next year. This dream would not only benefit this year’s class of nine and next year’s class of fifteen, but it would reach beyond that for years to follow.

If we were blessed enough to have our dream fulfilled, we’d finally have a community meeting space. Our class envisions we’d use that space like King Arthur’s round table where we can not only come together to learn during whole group instruction, but also to problem-solve issues our students or school might be facing. Like our classroom as a whole, the carpet will be a space where the children feel free to have a voice and where we continue to foster a sense of community, helping our children develop social skills critical to everyday life. Similarly, and because we live at school nearly a third of each day, a storage cabinet would not only help us store materials, but would also help create our classroom home by freeing other space for flexible seating options and learning spaces for other content areas, especially in reading and writing. Continuing to create a classroom home will help our students feel comfortable in their learning each day, and will continue to build our sense of family and belonging that is essential to education.
