Do It For The Culture (#900)

Do It For The Culture (#900)

African American children need books in their classroom that resemble them. It is imperative that they read books filled with pictures of people and children that look like them. They will be able to relate to skin color, hair texture, language, and many other characteristics resembling themselves. This not only helps our children to identify with themselves but with their culture as well. Having black books in an all African American setting is a necessity. It’s a way for children to see African Americans in a positive light, expand their imagination, and learn about the different leaders within their culture.

Children learn through reading; reading is essential. What better way to reach and teach a child about their culture than to read to them? Having more black books in our classroom will enhance the quality of the children’s learning by showing them different ways to problem solve based on obstacles that African Americans have experienced. They will learn how to use their critical thinking skills by processing how to handle or react to certain situations. As well as learn to accept people regardless of differences. Having black representation about black people in our classroom is so important because African American children need to see powerful and strong images that look like them.
