Quiet Your Mind (#200)

Quiet Your Mind (#200)

Many studies suggest that children who come from low income homes are less likely to have access to books. Having worked at Holy family school on Chicago’s west side for 6 years now, I can see that the children love books, they love to read and they love being read to. I can’t say what they have or do at home, but I would love to provide them with some quality age appropriate literature. These kids ask for books by name, they know about what authors and illustrators do, they love every aspect of literacy. Our classroom library area is composed of a small vinyl couch and chair and several books which will be going in the garbage soon because they are read so much that they are falling apart. It would be a dream come true to be able to have a cozy spot for the children to sit or lay and read books, or be read to.

We all know that reading is fundamental. I believe that the fulfillment of this dream would not only impact the students today but it will continue to impact them as they grow and move forward in their education. Having access to new, quality reading materials will give these students a head start and leave them better prepared for kindergarten. This will impact test scores not just for preschool, but moving forward for kindergarten and beyond. As far as the classroom, students will be able to have a comfortable, quiet space where they can enjoy reading and learning independently or in a small group.
