Back To The 20s…Back To The Basics (#105)

Back To The 20s…Back To The Basics (#105)

1920…A time of class, culture, fashion, industry, music and dance! It was also the year Grace English Lutheran School was founded. As part of the 100th Anniversary celebrations, we are revisiting some of the golden aspects of the roaring twenties! Before computers, cellphones, electronic devices, fake news and social media, there was face to face communication, in person friendships, and positive real-life interactions. In revisiting the past, we can stop and realize maybe they had a good thing going.

“Back to the 20’s…back to the Basics” is a dance program with which the students will revisit the basic social interactions that can’t be replaced by an electronic device. This will be done through a dance program directed and taught by Ms. Candace Swetz of Candace Dance Studio in Chicago. In this program she will be teaching the students in 1st-8th grade, various ballroom and Latin dances. Students will have the opportunity to learn social skills communication skills and etiquette; skills just as necessary to thriving in 1920 as today in 2020. The program will consist of sixteen 45 minute lessons to 1st – 5th grade and 6th-8th grade separately, and a final performance.

Now more than ever our current students at Grace are absorbed into the media through electronic devices and superficial interactions with peers. We are recently seeing increasingly negative effects on our students’, social, emotional and spiritual growth. This dance program has been a highlighted part of Grace’s curriculum since 2015. This school year we were not able to offer the dance program to our students. This has had a larger negative impact than anticipated. With the program “Back to the 20’s…Back to the Basics” in session, Grace will have a tool to be able to facilitate the academic, social, emotional and physical growth necessary for these future leaders to live and thrive in the roaring 20’s and beyond!
